Amritha Venketakrishnan of Hindustan Trading Company and a couple of young artists organised art workshops to raise funds for Kerala flood relief. There were six different workshops and the team raised Rs 1 lakh.

The benefit workshop was held last weekend at different venues in Chennai
Chennai:
“The effort was possible only because like-minded people came together — artists with their time and talent, venues with their space and us with our art supplies. We’re happy to have been able to raise a significant amount to contribute to this cause. I thought of this benefit workshop on August 17 after I ended a call with a volunteer who wanted help sourcing stationery supplies for school kids, whose belonging washed away in Kerala. This gave me the onus to get something started and I quickly set about calling artists I knew and all of them without hesitation said yes. I posted a story on Instagram and a few more came on board. Venues partners were more than willing to donate their space for the cause and we then set about marketing the event and used our social media capital to market the event and collect these funds,” says the main organiser Amritha.
One of the artists Mridula Ganesan was in-charge of the brush pen lettering workshop. She says, “We have seen the worst side of floods in 2015 and we know how tough it’s to build something from the scratch. The intensity of Kerala Floods is 100 times more than what happened in Chennai. When Amritha approached me and discussed about the possibilities, I was more than happy to be a part of it. Even the participants came forward wholeheartedly.”
