MUMBAI: A Vile Parle youth donated organs of her 54-year-old mother to give the gift of life to two terminally ill patients on Tuesday. With this, the number of cadaveric donations in the city has climbed to 33 this year.
Ashwini Tiwari (23) said her mother, Ujwala, was having her morning cup of tea on Monday when she suddenly collapsed. “We rushed her to Nanavati Hospital and doctors tried to revive her, but we were later told that she suffered a stroke,” she said. On Tuesday, doctors told the family that Ujwala was brain dead and the family could donate her organs. “My family members were not sure about it, but I had learnt about organ donation in a school poem and felt it was apt,” said Ashwini Tiwari. She convinced her family that her mother, “who always helped people around her”, would have wanted to help patients with end-stage organ failure. “This way, my mother continues to live,” she added.

Despite consent for more organs, the hospital could only retrieve the liver and a kidney due to medical issues. “This was the fourth cadaveric donation from Nanavati Hospital this year,” said an official. While her kidney was donated to a patient registered for transplant at Nanavati itself, the liver was donated to a patient at Global Hospital, Parel. Earlier this month, there were two cadaveric donations in 48 hours in the city. tnn
