CHANDIGARH: For the first time, the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) has issued property tax notices to government schools.

On Tuesday, the civic body issued notices to 13 government schools, asking them to pay up a total of Rs 3.02 crore.

Last month, the MC had issued property tax recovery notices of Rs 9.68 crore to 20 defaulters, including government offices, health institutes and companies working at Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park (RGCTP).

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, topped the list of defaulting schools. According to the latest notices, it owed Rs 59.62 lakh to the civic body. Second in line was Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, which owes Rs 33.52 lakh as property tax to Chandigarh MC. The MC has calculated the tax from 2005 to December 2017 and included interest component as well.

MC commissioner KK Yadav had recently ordered the MC tax branch to send notices to defaulters. The MC started taking action against defaulters in the wake of its huge financial crisis, which even led to works getting halted owing to lack of funds. Increase in property tax compliance is among the initiatives, the MC commissioner had mooted to increase its sources of income.

The corporation is a to achieve tax collection of Rs 50 crore this year. So far, the collection has nearly Rs 30 crore. Last year, property tax had fetched Rs 43 crore for the MC.

On property tax, the MC and IT firms at Rajiv Gandhi IT Park are also at loggerheads. To strengthen its case, the MC has cited a notification issued under Section 8 of the Punjab MC Act 1976 by the land acquisition officer, which states that the area of IT Park falls under Ward 26.
