AHMEDABAD: To encourage big pandals to go eco-friendly during the Ganesh festival, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided to offer cash awards. The decision to give the awards was taken in the standing
committee meeting on Wednesday. Standing committee chairman
Amul Bhatt said that the awards will be offered for each zone. The AMC will define the pandals in three categories: A, B, and C, in accordance with the size of the idol in the pandal.
Bhatt said the AMC will also award the Lok Manya Tilak Trophy for the best overall pandal. Bhatt said that the AMC will set up ponds for the disposal of plaster of Paris idols. Such idols for the past few years have not been immersed in the river.
Bhatt said that the disposal of PoP idols was a major issue and hence to promote eco-friendly festival, the AMC had conceived the awards.
