Constructed within a record period of five months

The 400 kv Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) sub-station, established as part of the sixth package of Kaleshwaram project at Nandi Medaram in Peddapally district, was commissioned by Chairman and Managing Director of TS-Genco and TS-Transco D. Prabhakar Rao from Telanagana State Load Dispatch Centre here on Tuesday.

It was commissioned by switching on the circuit breakers situated in the switch yard of the underground sub-station through online SCADA system. According to the officials of TS-Transco, it is the first 400 kv sub-station to be commissioned by a State power utility in the country. The underground sub-station has been constructed with an investment of ₹430 crore as part of the Kaleshwaram project within a “record period” of five months as against the standard norm of eight months.

The sub-station would power seven pumps with a capacity 124.4 mw each through an equal number of power transformers of 160 mva and two station transformers of 25 mva each. A total load of 870.8 mw would be extended to the pump house. The officials said the Nandi Medaram 400 kv sub-station was also the first GIS sub-station of TS-Transco. The 400 kv QMDC line for 20.3 km length from Ramadugu 400/13.8/11 kv sub-station is terminated at the outdoor switch yard which in turn is connected to GIS sub-station inside the tunnel through 400 kv, 2,500 sqmm XLPE cable.

Besides, Telangana is the first State in the country to utilise this 400 kv XLPE cable of 2,500 sqmm size. As the 2,500 sqmm size higher-capacity cables not manufactured in the country, they were imported from South Korea.
