PANAJI: Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to review the parking plan at Goa International Airport, Dabolim and is even exploring the possibility of removing the five minute limit for private vehicles, entering the airport area.

AAI has appointed a consultant to calculate the revenue generated for levying a fee on vehicles spending more than five minutes free time at the terminal arrival and departure ramp. “The policy is being reviewed and a new parking policy is under consideration,” airport director Bhupesh C H Negi said. The airport director said that AAI had received a lot of criticism about the five-minute limit on private vehicles.

“One of the reasons for vehicles exceeding the time is haphazard parking by taxis and other vehicles. Once the haphazard parking in the exit lane has been streamlined, the situation will be better,” Negi said.

AAI has asked the consultant to study the current parking situation, the revenue collected for seven days and then submit a report. AAI wants to find out the total monthly revenue generated through the existing car parking management service along with a break-up of the revenue from commercial vehicles and private vehicles separately.

“In case, charging of fees for above five minutes free time between entry and exit points is to be removed, the loss of revenue to AAI has to be calculated,” said an AAI official, explaining the authority’s stand to ask the consultant to calculate the yearly revenue and the loss that will be incurred due to a change in the parking policy.

The new parking policy aims to ensure proper traffic lane management of commercial and private vehicles for which AAI may ask the parking contractor to tow vehicles and impose penalties on commercial vehicles which block vehicular flow.

“The amount of penalty to be imposed may also be worked out and a standard operating procedure on lane management for commercial and private vehicles, towing of vehicles standing idle to avoid congestion with clear specification on number of traffic wardens, number of tow vehicles to be provided by AAI licencee may also be submitted,” says an AAI document.
