The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, K. Jana Reddy, demanded the TRS government to explain why it sought to dissolve the Assembly. He said it appears as though the government wants early elections before people get fully frustrated with its performance.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Reddy said the government could not fulfil the promises made to people, so it does not want its hollowness to be exposed.

Condemning the arrest of revolutionary writer Varavara Rao, Mr. Reddy said it amounted to suppressing the democratic rights of people. The role that the former played during peace talks with the government in 2004 was commendable.

Seeks inquiry

He demanded an inquiry into the charges against Mr. Varavara Rao, if need be by a Supreme Court judge, to unearth the truth.

Mr. Reddy said it was atrocious that the State and Central governments resorted to arresting Mr. Varavara Rao on baseless allegation of hatching a conspiracy.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council, Mohammed Ali Shabbir, told a separate press conference that it was unbelievable to hear that Mr. Varavara Rao conspired to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The Centre tried to earn public sympathy with such gimmicks ahead of elections. Earlier, the government perceived threat to Modi’s life from terrorists, and, now, it has cited Maoists,” he said.
