Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) teams conducted a surprise checking at the Valmiki Ambedkar Aavas Yojana (VAMBAY) housing scheme in the Danteshwar area of the city. The teams sealed 150 houses that had been rented out at the scheme.
The housing scheme that came up in Danteshwar in 2002 had 828 houses in it. The houses had been given on rent by their beneficiaries who were staying elsewhere. Like most government schemes for the urban poor, such houses cannot be rented out or sold to someone else.

The VAMBAY scheme was aimed at rehabilitating persons staying in slums. Both the central and state governments had contributed for schemes that came up under the scheme.

The civic body’s housing department officials along with personnel of the encroachment and security department conducted the surprise drive to identify houses in which persons other than the beneficiaries were staying.

The belonging of such persons were removed from the houses and the houses were sealed.

Sources said that such irregularities had come to light at other places in other housing schemes too. The civic body will be continuing the drive in the coming days to flush out those staying in such places illegally.
