KOLKATA: CID officers investigating the Momo Challenge said invites that are being sent across the state are locally generated and being sent to spread panic.
Prima facie, the cops are yet to get any evidence that suggests these messages were generated from foreign shores and “so far, the game has not claimed any victim, nor has anyone approached us saying they have played even the first level of it,”said Nishat Pervez, DIG (operations).

Top CID officers said necessary guidelines had been prepared by the cyber cell of CID and sent to all district SPs and commissioners asking them to raise awareness about the game. For this cops in the districts, especially in north Bengal, where the maximum number of invites are being sent out — have been notified about the case. “Although the invites might be fake, we want parents of recipients to contact us and inform us about what they are receiving so we can investigate the source of the message,” said Pervez.

“We have started the investigations to trace the actual users, who are using these numbers. It is important to know how tech-savvy these people are. If they are good, it might take us a bit longer to get to them,” said a senior police officer.

CID said the social media claim, which says the Momo Challenge has claimed lives of two persons at Kurseong in Darjeeling district was “far fetched” and devoid of any evidence as of now.”
