Traders and residents in Surampatti area on Tuesday resorted to a protest against the delay in relaying the road dug for under ground drainage works from Surampatti Four Roads to Surampatti Valasu.
Protesting against the delay, the traders downed their shutters. The six km. stretch from Four Roads to Nalliyampalayam in the Zone-III was dug for the drainage works a year ago. However, the road was not re-laid causing hardship to the road users. Traders said that the dust emanating from the road affect their business and also the students. They said that many were facing health problem and had submitted petitions to the Corporation officials many times. However, the road was not re-laid so far. On Monday, traders announced that they would close all the shops in the area to condemn the delay.
On Monday evening, Corporation zonal Assistant Commissioners Vijaya and Ashok Kumar meet the traders of SKC Road area. The officials said that works was on to float the tender for relaying the road added that work would begin soon. However, the traders refused to accept their assurance and said that they will go-ahead with the strike as planned.
Traders said that after many representations, officials had dumped crusher sand on the road leading to more trouble. It would take more months for the officials to relay the road and hence we had closed our shops, said the traders in the area.
Corporation officials said that tender would be floated for relaying the road from Four Roads to Jaganathapuram Colony at a cost of ₹ 1.40 crore and the work would begin in a few weeks, they added.
