NEW DELHI: Failing to get his daughters married off due to his dire financial status, a 55-year-old cycle repair mechanic in Sangam Vihar attacked his own sleeping family members with an iron rod. Before his son could stop him, the man had killed one daughter and left the other and his wife in perilous condition.

The desperate mechanic went on the rampage in his home in K Block of Sangam Vihar around 5am on Tuesday. Nand Kishore lives there with wife Vidyawati (50), sons Rahul, Ravi (18) and Mohit (19) and daughters Kavita (22) and Suman (24). A third daughter is married.

Rahul, the eyewitness, told police that he was awakened from sleep by noises from another room. Suspecting a burglar, he went there to find his mother and sisters lying on the bed, bloodied and injured.

“I saw my father standing against the bed with an iron rod in his hand. My mother and sisters were unconscious. I roused my brothers and we took the three of them to hospital,” Rahul said. He told the cops that his father had been visibly upset for the past few days.

The three women were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where doctors declared Kavita, a BA student at Delhi University, dead on arrival. The two others underwent surgeries during the day and remain in critical condition.

Romil Baaniya, DCP (South), announced that Nand Kishore has been charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Police also disclosed that the man had some arguments with his daughters a day earlier. They added he was suffering from high blood pressure.

In the interrogation at Sangam Vihar police station, the man told the cops that after the wedding of his eldest daughter, he did not have enough money to marry off his other children and felt burdened because of this. Many prospective grooms had turned down the proposals for his daughters due to their economic frailty.

The cops said that Nand Kishore had planned to kill himself after murdering the others. The statements of Rahul and his brothers were recorded, and samples collected for forensic analysis from the crime site.

Rahul’s friend, Sushil Kumar Sharma, said that the family never gave any indication that things were going wrong and no one foresaw such a thing happening. “Apart from their father, Rahul is the only other working member, employed at a mall. His brothers are still in school,” added Sharma.
