Elevated road link proposed between Delhi, Jewar airports

The Yamuna Expressway industrial development authority (YEIDA) on Tuesday said it is mulling over a proposal to construct a 67-km-long elevated road to connect Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport with Jewar, where an international airport has been proposed.

The objective to construct a dedicated elevated road is to develop a multimodal commute between the two airports.

YEIDA has asked the National Capital Region transport corporation (NCRTC) to conduct a feasibility study for the project by the next six months.

“We have decided to conduct a techno feasibility report (TFR) of connectivity of the route between the two destinations. The government is condering connecting the IGI and the Jewar airports through three modes of travel – via Metro link, high-speed Metro (rapid rail transit system) and an elevated road. But the projects will be finalised only after the TFR report comes in,” Arun Vir Singh, chief executive officer, YEIDA, said.

The TFR will find out if the proposed elevated stretch should run parallel to the Yamuna Expressway and the Noida Expressway, going all the way up to Sarai Kale Khan in south-east Delhi, or connected directly via Faridabad.

Officials said that if the proposed airport at Jewar becomes operational by 2022-23, it is essential to provide different modes of conveyance for commuters.

“The elevated road project, if materialised, is expected to cost atleast ₹15,000. Once the TFR is submitted, the YEIDA will decide on a detailed project report of the elevated road. This proposed stretch, the Metro link and the high-speed metro are required as the volume of traffic will increase manifold in the NCR once the airport at Jewar becomes a reality,” another YEIDA official said.

On March 14, the YEIDA had asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to conduct a feasibility study for the 39km Metro link proposed between Greater Noida’s Pari Chowk and the proposed Jewar airport. It had also asked the DMRC to conduct a feasibility study for a Metro project between Delhi’s IGIA and the proposed Jewar airport.

Officials said the two Metro projects are different from each other and will ply at an average speed of 30-35km per hour. Trains in the rapid rail transit system projects usually move at a speed of 150-175 km per hour.

The Union civil aviation ministry had, on June 24, 2017, given its approval to build an international airport at Jewar with a view to reduce the burden on the IGI airport.

The proposed airport is expected to become operational by 2023.
