A 16-year-old allegedly strangled his 19-year-old sister to death at Waliv, Vasai (East), on Monday, as he was angered by her habit of talking over the phone for long hours, which disturbed his sleep.

The Waliv police arrested the teenager and booked him under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code. The boy was produced in court on Tuesday and was sent to a remand home in Bhiwandi.

Inspector Bharat Jadhav from Waliv police station said the girl often talked to her friend after her mother left for work in the afternoon and late at night. The mother works as a domestic help in Borivli, while the woman’s husband was at their hometown in Jalgaon for the past two months.

“Her long conversations annoyed the boy as it would disturb his sleep. The two would argue over it, often. On Monday afternoon, the boy strangled his sister to death in a fit of rage after her conversation disturbed his sleep. He then called four of his friends to help him dispose of the body,” Jadhav said.

However, a neighbour decided to check what the commotion was about. When she peeped through the window, she saw the girl’s body lying on the bed and informed the police.

The Waliv police reached the spot and arrested the boy. They also recovered the dupatta he used to kill his sister. While the body was sent for post-mortem, the dupatta was sent for forensic analysis, the police said.
