Rains hit Delhi Blue Line metro service, delays to continue all day

Hundreds of commuters travelling on the Delhi Metro were stranded at several stations during morning rush hour on Tuesday as trains were delayed after a periodic maintenance could not be completed following heavy rains in the national capital.

Commuters said the trains arrived at an interval of 15 minutes to half an hour and the coaches were packed with passengers.

According to an official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), people will have to face more delays on the Blue Line (Dwarka-Noida City Centre/Vaishali) throughout the day on Tuesday.

“Due to some planned periodic maintenance by the track department in the night gone by, temporary speed restriction has been imposed on Up line between Subhash Nagar and Tilak Nagar stations (going towards Dwarka), which is likely to continue today,” the official was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“This may result in minor bunching or delay on the Blue Line. The maintenance work happens at night but the rains did not allow to finish it within the deadline,” the official said.

Heavy rains accompanied with lightning was reported around the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, central and south Delhi among other areas. Some areas, including Dhaula Kuan and Palam Mod, were waterlogged following the rains leading to traffic jams.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heavy rain at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, sub­-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan, Goa, Telangana and Coastal Karnataka on Tuesday.
