Man jailed for 11 years after 5kg ice deal in Perth car park

A 50-year-old man has been jailed for 11 years after supplying almost five kilograms of ice and possessing large amounts of other drugs in a hidden compartment in his car.

Gavin David Steers, 50, pleaded guilty to a string of serious drugs charges in the WA District Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Steers supplied 4.9 kilograms of ice to a woman in an underground car park in Perth earlier this year.

A raid on Steers’ city hotel room shortly after the transaction uncovered large amounts of cocaine and more meth.

The court heard those drugs were found hidden in a purpose built compartment of his Toyota Prado.

The court was told Steers was offered $20,000 to drive the drugs from Victoria to Perth.

Judge Vicki Stewart said while Steers had played the role of a courier, he had also played a significant role in what she described as a large scale drug network.

She said she believed Steers had become involved in the drug network for financial gain.

Steers had no supporters in court on Tuesday and showed little emotion as the 11 year term was handed down.

He will be eligible for parole after serving nine years.
