Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced the launch of its third offshore patrol vehicle (OPV-3) at the L&T shipyard at Kattupalli here on Tuesday. The vessel launch is part of L&T’s contract with the Defence Ministry in 2015 to design and construct seven OPVs and deliver them to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) between 2018 to 2021.
The first of class OPV-1 (ICGS Vikram, launched in October 2017) was handed over in April 2018 and commissioned ahead of the contracted schedule. OPV-2 was launched on January 20 and is about to be handed over to the ICG. Currently, work is simultaneously in progress on the fourth, fifth and sixth OPVs at different levels of completion, said a company press release.
