Mumbai: Rs 1 lakh fine and 5 years in jail if found violating noise pollution rules in silent zones


With raising concerns of noise pollution, the Maharashtra government on Sunday announced that violating noise pollution norms in Mumbai’s silent zones would get Rs 1 lakh and a jail term of 5 years. The decision came in a wake of upcoming festival season. The government has also urged citizens to come forward and register complaints in police stations if come across any such instances. Citizens can file complaint by dialing police helpline number 100. Citizens can also file complaints on the email address mcrcpmumbaimahapolice.government.in.

As per a report in Indian Express, 110 areas in Mumbai have been listed as silent zones including all government and private hospitals, nursing homes, schools and colleges as well as courts. The schools, colleges and hospitals include, Mumbai University, Bombay HC, Government Law College and SNDT Women College, J.J Hospital and Jaslok Hospital.

“If there is violation of noise pollution norms in these 110 places, it would invite imprisonment up to five years and a fine of Rs 1 lakh,” reads state govt in News18.


The noise level in these silent zones during the day, said the government, cannot exceed 50 decibel and 40 decibel during the night while in commercial areas, noise level should be 75 decibel in the day and 70 decibel at night.
