
Saina Nehwal had to settle for a bronze medal after losing to Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying
Indian star shuttler Saina Nehwal had to settle for the bronze medal after she was outplayed by World No.1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the Women's singles semifinals event.
Nehwal, who was in good form so far, lost to Tzu Ying 17-21, 14-21 in the semis, thus leaving PV Sindhu as the only Indian in the sport.
Her bronze is the first individual badminton medal for India in 36 years and it's the first ever women's individual badminton medal in the Asian Games.
Saina was assured a medal after she made her way through the quarterfinals, defeating world number five Ratchanok Intanon 21-18 21-16 in a 42-minute encounter. Sindhu then fought past world number 12 Nitchaon Jindapol 21-11 16-21 21-14 in the other quarterfinal.
