In a move to generate awareness about traffic rules, women personnel of Gurugram traffic police and Road Safety Officers (RSOs) tied rakhis to around 700 traffic violators and requested them to follow safety norms.

The special drive was kicked off by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Hira Singh along with area traffic Inspectors and was conducted at three locations in the city, including Iffco Chowk and Mahavir Chowk in old Gurugram.

Seven hundred violators took the pledge to drive safely and rakhis (as a knot of protection) were tied on their wrists. Also, 1,000 traffic instructions stickers were pasted on vehicles during the awareness programme.

“We asked those persons (traffic violator) to take the pledge and promise to follow all traffic rules under all circumstances to protect himself and his family,” said Poonam Devi, traffic personnel. The traffic cops also requested the sisters to gift a helmet to their brothers this Raksha Bandhan and ask them to follow all traffic rules.

“On this auspicious day we educated the people not to violate traffic signals, wear  helmet while driving. We have requested the parents not to allow their minor children to drive,” Singh, said.

“We need to spread the message of women's safety as well as make people aware of traffic rules. With the help of street plays we educated the people on traffic rules such as not using a mobile phone while driving, wearing a seatbelt,  and avoiding drunk driving,” the ACP said.

Apart from this, the police also circulated pamphlets with traffic rules directions and also put stickers on the violators' vehicles.

“The drive was appreciated by the people. A couple of violators feel that they had committed a mistake and also took the pledge that they will not disobey traffic rules,” a Road Safety Officer said.
