PM Narendra Modi had on August 15 announced rolling out of the world’s largest health scheme — Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Scheme.
The Union minister said that states would be given flexibility to decide on the mode of implementation, whether they want to go for insurance model or trust model or mixed model. Under the PMJAY, payments will be done cashless and paperless at both public and private panelled hospitals. The services will include 1,350 procedures covering pre and post hospitalisation, diagnostics and medicines.

The PMJAY will cover Rs 5 lakh per family per year. Approximately, 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families shall be covered to claim benefit under the Socio Economic Caste Census (SECC) data. Under the PMJAY, there is no cap on the number of family members or age of the members. All existing health conditions are also covered in the scheme.
Under the PMJAY, beneficiaries will be able to move across borders and access the services across the country.
"Pradhan Mantri Aarogya Mitras (PMAMs) will be the primary point of facilitation for the beneficiaries to avail treatment at hospitals and thus, act as a support system to streamline health service delivery," said Nadda.
Nadda said that 7 states have decided to adopt the insurance mode, 18 will follow the trust route while 9 are following the mixed model for the PMJAY.
The universal health scheme assumes significance as it will provide free treatment for all critical diseases that require hospitalisation, which is often out of reach of the poor because of spiralling costs.
