NEW DELHI: If the cause is worthy enough, some judicial restraint can be shed. In what could well be a first,
Supreme Court judges Kurian Joseph and KM Joseph took the stage at a function here on Monday to showcase their singing talent for flood relief in their home state
Kerala.
Shedding their traditional reserve, the judges provided a glimpse of talent other than legal acumen at the function organised by media persons reporting on the SC as they demonstrated their vocal skills to enthral a packed audience.
Justice KM Joseph was impressive as he sang in Malayalam and Hindi. With panache of a trained singer he was at ease with both high and low notes of the song 'Madhuwan Khusbu Deta Hai', originally sung by legendary singer Yasudas, and was given a standing ovation.
Speaking on the occasion, the newly appointed judge said people from all religions should come out in support for the cause. He said the Constitution talks about harmony and cohesiveness and it times like the present the citizens should come together and display solidarity.
Justice Kurian Joseph joined noted Bollywood singer Mohit Chauhan for a duet and sang 'We shall overcome someday'. With a SC judge standing by his side, Chauhan asked Justice Joseph to start first saying that he will follow but Justice Joseph, perhaps willing to take a cue, said "You first".
A large number of people including judges from the Supreme Court and Delhi high court attended the function to show their solidarity for the flood victims of Kerala.
