Police on alert for today’s Adivasi protest meeting

A post on social messaging platform, WhatsApp, proposing killing of tahsildars, has made the Revenue and Police authorities in Adilabad district an anxious lot. A search is going on in the cyber world for the sender of the message so that he can be brought to book to curb any recurrence of similar happenings.

According to sources, the message appeared in Whatsapp groups in which killing of tahsildars was mooted so that it has a deterrent effect for while issuing Agency Area certificates, or Local Scheduled Tribe certificates, to Lambadas. The aboriginal people have been accusing a few tahsildars of showing discrimination in issue of the certificates.

The post in question mentions that the tahsildars are seeking several documents as proof for issuing the LST certificate to Adivasis while they have no qualms in doing so in case of Lambada applicants. The ethnic people will be staging a protest in front of the Collectorate in this regard on Monday while they have already objected to issue of certificates by tahsildars of Utnoor, Narnoor and Indervelli mandals.

Collector D. Divya and Superintendent of Police Vishnu S. Warrier met Adivasi elders and told them that threats against officials will not be tolerated or taken lightly. The latter denied any knowledge of the post but produced a couple of certificates issued to Adivasis and Lambadas in support of their contention of discrimination.

The top officials also met the tahsildars and told them to be careful while giving certificates to applicants. There should be no discrimination in doing so, the officials were advised.

Mr. Warrier also assured that the person or persons who made the threatening post will be soon be identified and a case booked. Meanwhile, the police is gearing up for Monday's protest.
