President Donald Trump rejected a White House statement that praised the accomplishments of Sen. John McCain and referred to him as a "hero," the Washington Post reported Sunday, and instead issued a brief, more generic tweet. The Post said a statement had been drafted before McCain died Saturday that included kind words for McCain and noted his service in the military and the Senate. Instead, Trump tweeted Saturday: "My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" Trump's tweet was in sharp contrast to heartfelt sympathies expressed by lawmakers, Cabinet officials, former presidents and foreign leaders. Trump and McCain were far from friendly, and Trump once said McCain was "not a war hero" because he was captured in Vietnam.
