HOWRAH: A 30-year-old Liluah housewife was allegedly tortured and killed on Sunday. Her body found hanging in the morning before she was slated to leave home to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with her brother in Midnapore.
Based on the brother's complaint, the Howrah police lodged a murder case and arrested Swapna Jana's husband Arun, a local hosiery factory owner.

Swapna was married for 10 years. The couple have a nine-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son. According to the complaint, Swapna's father had assured a substantial dowry during their marriage. He gave most of it, but couldn't provide Rs 25,000. As this wasn't given before marriage, Arun had been demanding Rs 30,000 from Swapna's family to "expand his business". After some time, Swapna's father died, leaving the family in a financial crisis. Hence, they were unable to meet Arun's demand.

On Saturday night, Swapna called her brother Surajit Pyne and told him that she would go to his place to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. Before she could finish the call, Surajit overheard an infuriated Arun asking her why she kept relations with a family who were reluctant to pay him his "dues". Sensing something wrong, Surajit left for Swapna's marital home in Liluah's Chamrail early morning. When he reached there, he found Swapna hanging from the ceiling fan. He also noticed bruises on her body.
