Expect light to moderate rain in Delhi on Tuesday: MeT officials

Light to moderate rain could hit Delhi on Tuesday, scientists from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast on Sunday.

“While on one hand a cyclonic circulation has developed over south-east Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon trough is also located very close to Delhi. We are expecting some light rain on Monday and light to moderate rain on Tuesday,” said an IMD scientist.

Meanwhile a low pressure has developed over the Bay of Bengal. More moisture-laden easterly winds are likely to gush in once the system hits the mainland and moves towards the west, IMD officials said on Sunday.

This year monsoon had hit Delhi on June 28, one day ahead of its scheduled arrival.

Usually Delhi receives 497.9mm of rain between July 1 and August 26. But this year the national Capital has received 453.2mm of rain. There is a deficiency of around nine per cent, which experts said is normal.

“Monsoon usually retreats from Delhi by the third week of September. Till now we have not seen any withdrawal symptoms of the monsoon. There is still time to meet this deficiency,” the official added.

While the maximum temperature on Sunday was recorded to be 34.9 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature stood at 27 degrees Celsius, both of which were one degree above normal.

The mercury level is expected to drop by two to three degrees by Wednesday after rain hits Delhi, the IMD scientist said.
