ALLAHABAD: Flash floods in the rivers like Chambal, Ken and Betwa in Madhya Pradesh and the incessant rain over the last two days led to a sudden rise in the water level of Ganga in Allahabad on Saturday.
The rain water has inundated low-lying areas in the city.

Over 15,000 cusec of water is being released daily from Ganga barrage in Kanpur into the rivers leading to the rise in its water level.

The district flood division is regularly monitoring the river's water level.

Executive engineer (flood division) of irrigation department, Manoj Kumar, said, "The water level of Ganga at Phaphamau is increasing at a slow pace while the Yamuna at Naini is stable."

The level of Ganga was recorded at 79.41 metre at Phaphamau while at Chatnag it was recorded at 76.72 metre.

Both Ganga and Yamuna have registered an increase of 4cm and 6cm.

At Naini, the Yamuna is rising steadily at 76.26 metre, against the danger mark of 84.73 metre.

Irrigation department officials said that water is being constantly released from barrages and dams which has led to an increase in Ganga's water level at Phaphamau.

Meanwhile, flood chowkis have been set up and the district administration is mobilising volunteers from civil defence corps, NGOs and other organisations to help out in case there is a sudden surge in water level in low-lying areas of the city.
