20 detained for pelting stones at police team

A protest against the rape of a 9-year-old girl in Rangpuri Pahari area in Vasant Kunj turned violent on Friday night as protesters pelted stones at police, injuring 10 cops, including two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP). About 12 vehicles damaged by protesters. Police on Saturday said they have detained over 20 people who were part of the violent protest.

A large number of protesters had on Friday night blocked both the carriageways of the Chhatarpur-Mahipalpur road near the Hoti camp Jhuggi.

“Police were alerted about a traffic jam near Ryan International School at Vasant Kunj area following which a team rushed to the spot,” said Devendra Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South West district.

The DCP said the police abortively tried to pacify the agitators by reasoning that the accused rapist has been arrested. “But the protesters pelted stones on the police personnel,” said the DCP.

“After repeated warning when the crowd did not disperse, police had to use mild force to maintain law and order,” said a police official.

“A case of rioting has been registered and we have detained over 20 protesters, while the injured cops, including two ACPs, two inspectors, an ASI, a head constable and four constables, were sent for treatment. 11 private cars and a police vehicle were damaged by the protesters,” said a police official.

Earlier on Friday, the Delhi Police nabbed the 34 year-old rape accused from near Nala camp area. The minor girl was violated when she had gone to relieve herself in a forest area on Wednesday night.

“The accused identified as Prakash is a ragpicker. During interrogation, he confessed to his crime,”said a police official.

Victim’s father rued about the lack of safety in the area even at public toilets. “There is no toilet in my house and the public toilet in the area is not safe so we often go to forest area to relieve our self. As there is no streetlight in the area, drug addicts roam around and often create problems in the area,” said the victim’s father who lives in a shack at the JJ colony with his wife, son and two daughters and runs a small shop.
