The Rakhi festival, popularly known as Raksha Bandhan, served as a perfect platform for creating awareness on the importance of wearing a helmet while riding two-wheelers, reflecting the underlying spirit of the festival.
Upholding the true essence of Raksha Bandhan (the bond of protection), a group of women gifted a helmet to Khammam MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar before tying rakhis on his wrist here on Sunday.
Overwhelmed by their gesture, Mr. Ajay offered them sweets and appreciated their effort to raise awareness on the need for wearing helmets while driving two-wheelers for safety.
Meanwhile, some youngsters used the instant messaging platform, WhatsApp, to spread road safety awareness through Raksha Bandhan greetings.
In Bhadradri-Kothagudem district, Rakhi festival was celebrated at the office of Kothagudem DSP in the coal town.
In a rare gesture, Venkatanarasamma, an elderly woman, had come all the way from her native Dharmasagar in Warangal district to Kothagudem to tie Rakhi to Kothagudem DSP S.M. Ali, who had worked as a circle inspector of police in the neighbouring district a few years ago.
Meanwhile, the Rakhi festival was celebrated across the district as well as the State with great fervour.
