Neil Simon - one of Broadway's most prolific and popular playwrights - has died at the age of 91.

His publicist confirming to the New York Times that Simon passed away on Sunday in Manhattan.

Simon wrote more than 40 plays - and won four Tony awards... one of them for 1965's "The Odd Couple"- later adapted into a popular movie and TV series.... and revived on Broadway in 2005, with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick - the latter having also starred in Simon's semi-autobiographical plays 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' and 'Biloxi Blues.'

Simon won the Pulitizer Prize for drama in 1991 for "Lost in Yonkers," a story about the relationship between an abusive mother and her grown children.

His plays were funny, moving and immensely popular... often reflecting his own New York Jewish upbringing.

Playwright and actor Harvey Fierstein called Simon's death "a loss 4 the entire entertainment industry" - The Tony Awards tweeting that "the final curtain has fallen for one of the gods of Broadway."
