LUCKNOW: A
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) head constable allegedly shot himself with an AK-47
rifle in Bijnore locality, under the jurisdiction of Sarojininagar police station, on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased,
Arvind Kumar (50), was a native of
Meerut and was posted as a mess commander at CRPF Group Centre. The CCTV footage from the centre shows Kumar entering the Guard room with someone, while talking on the phone, at 12: 48pm.
At 12: 51pm, the guard stationed outside the room heard a series of gun shots and rushed inside to find Kumar lying dead on his cot with an
AK-47 rifle lying next to him.
The guard informed the Commander of the centre. Later, senior CRPF officials rushed to the spot and informed the police. Station house officer of Sarojininagar police station, Ram Soorat Sonkar, said Kumar shot himself with the AK-47 rifle allotted to another CRPF head constable Anil Singh.
“Anil had put his service weapon in the guard room and had gone to the washroom when Arvind shot himself. He fired more than eight rounds of bullets and suffered three gunshots on his body,” the SHO said.
Sonkar said that Kumar suffered gun shot injuries on his left temple, right hand and stomach. “The body had been sent for autopsy. The exact number of wounds will be clear after the autopsy,” he added. IG (Lucknow range) Sujeet Pandey, said, “Prima facie, it appears that Kumar killed himself with an AK-47. No other person was present in the room when the incident took place. We are trying to find out why Arvind decided to end his life.” Sources in police department said that 16 shells of bullets were recovered from the guard room, of which one cartridge was found in the chamber of the rifle.
“There were 13 unused bullets in the magazine attached to the weapon,” said the source. Commandant of CRPF Group Centre (Bijnore), Shayamchand Dey, said, “Police and forensic team inspected the crime scene as a part of their investigation.”
