Setting aside the misery brought about by floods, people at relief camps in Alappuzha celebrated Onam on Saturday.
Ministers and people from various walks of life joined them in celebrating the festival.
Public Works Minister G. Sudhakaran spent the day with the residents of a relief camp at Kanichukulangara Vocational Higher Secondary School.
A total of 15,000 people, including flood-hit ones, peoples representatives, and others were served ‘Onasadya.’
SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan distributed ‘Onakodi’ and ‘Onakaineettam’ to the residents of the camp.
Soothing songs
Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac and playback singer K.S. Chithra celebrated Onam with the residents of a relief camp at SDV Central School, Alappuzha.
Ms. Chithra enthralled the audience with a few songs. They also had ‘Onasadya’ at the camp. ‘Chenda melam’ and ‘vattakali’ were also staged.
With fisher’s family
Alappuzha District Collector S. Suhas celebrated the day by having ‘Onasadya’ with the family of a fisherman who took part in the flood-rescue operations in the district.
On Saturday, the Collector visited the house of Peter, Thayil House, Vadackal. A five-member team led by Mr. Peter had rescued several people from flood-hit Kuttanad.
Mr. Suhas said that he visited Peter’s home to convey his gratitude.
