When Mani Ratnam announced Chekka Chivantha Vaanam with a stellar star cast boasting of names like Prakash Raj and Arvind Swami, fans expected it to be another classic like Thalapathy. The trailer for the film, however, shows that it is nowhere close to it, except when it comes to focussing on relationships.

The trailer begins with Prakash Raj who plays the role of a mafia kingpin, Senapaty. He is approached by another businessman who wonders what will happen to the business when Senapaty is no more. He asks, “Who will go to after you? Which of your sons?” Arvind Swami’s Varadan thinks he is the right choice because he has already manages the ‘family business’. He also feels that his brothers are ‘educated and may not want to do such dirty work’. But surprise, surprise; both of them want a piece of the pie.

Just when you thought that the film is about three brothers and how they fight each other to achieve the number one position, Mani throws in a twist in the form of Rasool, played by Vijay Sethupathi. The brothers may have their differences, but when it comes to an outside force trying to ruin them, they join hands. If not, why would the three even spend time together during car chases?

At first glance, Rasool looks like a corrupt cop. He is Varadan’s oldest friend and his fellow cops have labelled him a rogue already. But is he? Because at the end of the trailer, it boils down to Varadan being betrayed by Rasool. He even says, “Do you have an old friend. If you do, do not trust him.”

Aditi Rao Hydari is the another twist. She is a reporter who is initially seen questioning who Senapaty really is but ends up becoming Varadan’s mistress. The duality of relationships and how each unravels when faced with difficult situations is what Chekka Chivatha Vaanam is all about.

The film is jointly produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions and has music composed by AR Rahman, and the film is slated to release on September 28. It also stars Jayasudha, Arvind Swami, Jyothika, Arun Vijay, Aishwarya Rajesh, Silambarasam and Dayana Erappa.
