GREATER NOIDA: Nearly 250 contractual workers, including painters, plumbers and carpenters, protested outside the Sharda University on Friday, alleging that wages for past 50 days had been withheld by the contractor.

The protesters included about 50 carpenters, 30 plumbers and the rest of them painters. They said about 160 of them had been working overtime in the university’s hostels but hadn’t been paid their wages.

Contractual workers are paid Rs 400 daily and an overtime allowance of Rs 200. “We worked in different hostels. Although we were told be paid Rs 600 daily, including overtime after 4pm, we’re still waiting for wages,” said Rahul Kumar, a painter.

As the protesters threatened to block the road, the university management paid each of them Rs 2,000. “We had cleared the payments of the contractor, but he could not disburse the amount. So, we made a part payment to the workers,” said Ajit Kumar, a spokesperson for the varsity.
