GURUGRAM: A
chain snatcher broke his right leg after he jumped from a
flyover on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway at Sector 31 on Thursday night, after being cornered by police. Earlier in the evening, Shaukeen Khan (30), along with his accomplice, had pointed a gun to snatch a gold chain from a South City 1 resident, who was on a two-wheeler near the sector 31-45 crossing.
The crime branch traced him to the expressway, but when they tried to nab him, he jumped off the flyover. He is currently admitted in Civil Hospital, where he is being treated under police watch, while his accomplice is on run. An FIR has been registered at Sector 40 police station.
As per the complaint filed by South City 1 resident Ashok Bhardwaj (50) the
snatching took place around 6pm on Thursday, when he was returning from Huda City Centre metro station on his scooterette. As he stopped at the traffic signal at the sector 32-45 crossing, two men on an unmarked black motorbike stopped next to him and whipped out a pistol. They fled after snatching his gold chain with locket.
“I began following them. At the next traffic signal near sector 40-45, I managed to close down on them. I caught hold of the pillion rider, but the driver fled on the bike after taking a sudden U-turn on seeing a police barricade metres ahead. I shouted for help, at which commuters gathered by my side, but the pillion rider escaped by shoving me,” wrote Bhardwaj in his complaint.
An FIR was registered against the two bike-borne snatchers based on Bhardwaj’s complaint, under Section 379B (snatching and use of force) of IPC and sections 25-54-59 of the Arms Act, at Sector 40 police station. Teams of cops from the police station, including crime unit staff, promptly began investigations into the matter.
As per police, around 11pm, crime unit inspector Amit Kumar got a tip-off about a snatcher spotted near the service lane of the Sector 31 flyover. Kumar reached the spot with his team, but the suspect saw them and started running towards the main carriageway of the flyover after jumping over a police barricade.
“Two cops gave him the chase, while we drove down the wrong side of the flyover to corner him. When he realised there was no escape, the snatcher jumped from the flyover, and broke a bone in his right leg. We have arrested him and recovered three stolen gold chains, a country-made pistol and three cartridges from his possession,” said Kumar, adding, “He was rushed to Civil hospital where he is being treated. He will be arrested as soon as he is discharged. He has named his accomplice as Mustakim. We’re conducting raids to nab him. Khan is a native of Nuh. We hope to crack other cases during his questioning.”
