A seven-year-old boy died after he was crushed by a lift in a four-storey apartment at Vaas Lane on Thursday evening.
According to the Mangaluru East police, Mohammed Shimak was staying with his mother in a flat on the second floor of an old apartment.
His father, Mohammed Bashir, works in a firm in Dubai.
Around 6 p.m., Shimak and his mother left the house to go shopping. As his mother was locking the door of the flat, Shimak rushed towards the lift, which is an old one.
Shimak reportedly entered the lift after opening the first door and then the lift door. Before he could close the lift door, the lift reportedly began to move.
He was crushed by the lift, which got stuck after moving for a while.
The police said that residents rushed to the top of apartment to manually bring the lift back to the second floor while pulling Shimak out. The residents took Shimak to the nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Shimakâs relatives have filed a complaint accusing the apartment owners association and the agency maintaining the lift of negligence.
The police said the association members and the agency have denied of any negligence and said the lift was being serviced regularly.
