Workers of the Pondicherry State Weavers’ Cooperative Society (Pontex) on Friday locked the main gates of the government undertaking at Thattachavady as a mark of protest against the government’s failure to disburse salary and to meet other demands.
A spokesperson of the Pontex Workers’ Union said the workers had not been paid wages for the last seven weeks. The authorities should ensure uninterrupted supply of yarn to weavers.
Earlier, free saris and lungis that were given to people living below poverty line were procured from the handloom weavers.
But for the past two years, the weavers had not received any thread or any order. The government should issue an order for enabling supply of handloom products under various government schemes, he added.
