Relief kits comprising food and other essentials are being prepared for the flood-affected people returning home from relief camps, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla has said.
Kits will be delivered with the help of volunteers. Already, 4,500 kits have been distributed at Muvattupuzha, while around 2,000 have been delivered by Anbodu Kochi, a voluntary organisation. So far, over 15,000 kits have been prepared at the Thrikkakara community hall, which is the main collection and distribution centre for relief materials in the district.
Around 200 volunteers are engaged in the preparation of kits, which will be distributed in Aluva and Paravur areas in the coming days, Mr. Safirulla told the media at Thrikkakara on Friday. At present, over two lakh flood-hit people are living in camps, while around three lakh have returned home. Meal complete with sadya will be distributed at camps on Thiruvonam on Saturday.
A comprehensive plan for rebuilding the flood-hit Kadamakkudy panchayat will be prepared in association with the district administration, said S. Sarma, MLA. Damaged roads will be repaired, and transportation facilities will be restored. Ferry services will be back in action shortly, he added.
The government will support people who have lost homes under the LIFE Mission project. A majority of homes in the panchayat are not fit for living, with the walls of several houses having either collapsed or developed cracks.
Cheriya Kadamakkudy and Pizhala islands are completely cut off. Over a thousand flood-hit people remain at camps functional at Kothad Church and Maharaja’s College.
Medical camps
Meanwhile, the District Medical Officer said medical camps should not be illegally held in flood-hit areas. It had come to the notice of the Health authorities that several camps were being held across the district without proper monitoring.
Many patients receiving treatment under various Central and State government schemes also have attended such camps, which will disrupt their continuous treatment and proper follow-up.
While thanking individuals and organisations for their work, the Health Department asked those interested in holding medical camps to contact the medical control room functional at the General Hospital (Tel - 99469-92995).
