Vijayakant hints at going it alone in poll

A day before his birthday, DMDK founder Vijayakant on Friday hinted that his party would go it alone in next year’s Lok Sabha poll, by calling upon the cadre to work for the victory of the party in all parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

“Let us all work towards winning all parliamentary seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and serve the people,” he said in a statement issued in Chennai.

“Those in power today are only interested in holding on to power. Politics is about working for the public good. The DMDK will work towards solving these issues [faced by the public],” said Mr. Vijayakant, accusing the current AIADMK government of not working in the interests of the people.

Earlier, though he participated in a party function, he did not address journalists, citing ill-health.

Speaking during the event, his wife and fellow party leader Premalatha said that Tamil Nadu was facing a paucity of leaders. Mr. Vijayakant would “make a strong statement in Tamil Nadu politics” once he recovers, she added.
