GURUGRAM: Around 50 children took to the streets in sectors 31/39 to spread the message of safe driving on Saturday, a day before
Raksha Bandhan.
Those who were found violating
traffic norms were asked to take a pledge to drive safely and ride their bikes wearing a
helmet. The children also gave them helmet-shaped
rakhis to remind them of their pledge.
The programme was initiated by EcoLibFoundation, an NGO that has been running a programme called ‘radiant kids remedial school’ for underprivileged children, in Jharsa village. “We work to educate around 260 underprivileged children,” said Aparna Singh , the NGO’s founder.
“The children worked very hard to make this drive a success and were able to get over 100 signatures by bikers pledging to follow traffic rules. They also distributed around 100 helmet-shaped rakhis to two-wheeler riders to make them aware of the dangers of riding without a helmet,” Singh added.
Neha and Nitika, who were among the children distributing rakhis, said: “We have a 12-year-old brother, he rides a bike even though he doesn’t have a permit and also doesn’t wear a helmet. Our parents don’t pay heed to us when we point this out. Now, we won’t allow him to ride the bike any more.”
This initiative came a day ahead of the city police’s campaign to spread awareness about traffic laws called ‘Suraksha Bandhan’.
On Sunday, Gurugram traffic police will also tie rakhis to bikers found riding without a helmet at least at three spots across the city.
