LUDHIANA: The 50-year-old Nirmala Devi had a new lease of life after getting operated at civil Hospital Ludhiana where doctors removed a tumour weighing 10.5 kgfrom her ovary on Saturday. The doctors claimed that it was a challenging case and such a huge size tumour has not been removed not only at a civil hospital but also in the entire city.

Belonging to a poor family Nirmala Devi was in pain and was unable to lie down or walk properly due to pain in her abdomen. She was taken to a private medical college in the city but there she was asked to pay Rs 1.5 lakh as operation fee. Then she was rushed to a civil hospital for treatment. The doctors at the civil hospital took the challenge and became successful in removing the tumour. The patient has been kept under observation.

The head of the department (surgery) Dr Varun Saggar said, "The main issue was of big size because it could have busted as well. It was difficult to give her anaesthesia as well but all is well when ends well." He said she is fine and they are observing her.

Meanwhile, another surgeon who also treated patient Dr Milan Verma said, "We are operating cancer patients regularly but such a large size tumour has not been removed at the civil hospital earlier." He said the Tumour was pressing the vessels and she could hardly lie down, which made it challenging. He claimed indeed it’s the first time such a large weighing tumour is operated at Ludhiana.

However, Alkesh son of Nirmala Devi who lives in Civil Lines area said he was really thankful to the God and doctors at the civil hospital who treated her mother free of cost. He said he did not have money to get this operation done and if he would not have brought her here so anything could have happened.
