Mumbai: Two people have been arrested for allegedly cheating youths by promising them jobs in the Indian Railways from Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal’s quota.

The accused have been identified as Rufus Dhabre and Manjit Singh Chhilotre. According to the MRA Marg police, the lid was blown of the racket when one of the accused spilled the beans on his accomplice.

“Mr. Dhabre wrote an email to Mr. Goyal’s official email ID, saying he had unknowingly collected money from several job seekers at Mr. Chhilotre’s behest, as he had told him that he knew Mr. Goyal personally. The minister’s private secretary Pravin Gedam registered a case with the MRA Marg police, and inquiries were initiated,” Abhishek Trimukhe, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I), said.

The police started making inquiries with Mr. Dhabre, who told them that Mr. Chhilotre was offering jobs through Mr. Goyal’s personal quota to aspirants who were preparing for the Indian Railways’ recruitment drive for Class B and Class C posts. “However, we established Mr. Dhabre’s culpability and arrested him on Thursday. Based on his interrogation, we arrested Mr. Chhilotre in Delhi on Friday. Inquiries so far indicate that they have cheated several job seekers to the tune of ₹93 lakh,” Mr. Trimukhe said.

Mr. Dhabre, who stays in Vasai, would approach youths from his locality and offer to secure jobs for them in exchange for around ₹7 lakh each. The police have found at least seven victims from Vasai.

“We also have information that there are five other accused involved in the offence. The arrested accused have been remanded in police custody till August 30,” Mr. Trimukhe said.
