HYDERABAD: A 50-year-old constable who has a debt of Rs 2.5 lakh has become a Good Samaritan by donating his one month’s salary to
Kerala chief minister’s relief fund.
On August 22, T Raju, a constable at
Charminar police station in Hyderabad Commissionerate, gave Rs 68,200 in cash to sub-inspector (admin) of
Charminar police station.
SI Pandari said the money has been deposited with the Kerala CM’s relief fund.
“I wanted to donate the money through police department. So I gave the amount to our SI since he was the senior-most officer available at the police station at that moment,” Raju said.
Raju recalled for TOI the moment of empathy that made him do the noble act. “After finishing my duties on August 19, I returned home at night. Before going to bed I watch news every night. All the news channels were showing the plight of people in flood-ravaged Kerala. I could not control tears and cried silently so that my wife and younger daughter in the next room would not be disturbed. At that moment I decided to donate my one month’s salary for the benefit of flood victims,” Raju said.
Raju had lost his constable father when he was barely a few months old. Raju and his seven siblings had to endure poverty in the early years before he became a cop.
“Before joining the service in 1990 I have done several jobs. I even worked as a construction worker for Rs 6 daily wage. I have Rs 2.5L debt but I am confident that I can clear it as my children are well educated and I am also a salaried employee. I felt that flood victims in Kerala need the money more than I do at this moment,” Raju said.
