PUNE: A final-year student of Ayurveda was detained on Saturday evening for allegedly throttling his
live-in partner to death at his rented flat at
Ambegaon Pathar on the intervening night of August 23 and 24.
The deceased woman (35) was staying with the suspect in his rented flat since 2014. According to police, she was earlier a commercial sex worker and had met the youth at Bhandup in Mumbai. When he got admission to an Ayurveda college in Rasta Peth, they started living together in the rented flat in the Bharti Vidyapeeth area.
Senior police inspector Vishnu Pawar of the
Bharati Vidyapeeth said, “We came to know during our investigation that the woman had demanded Rs50 lakh from the student and had threatened to defame him if her demand was not met with. The duo often fought over the matter. On August 23 night, they had a tiff over the same issue.”
During the fight, Pawar said, the angry student throttled the woman to death. “Later, he wrapped her body in a bedsheet and dumped it in the society’s underground water tank in the early hours of August 24,” he said.
When the society’s residents opened the tank on Saturday evening, they found the woman’s body and alerted the police. The police rushed to the society and fished out her body. It was later sent to Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem.
Pawar said, “The post-mortem revealed that the woman was throttled to death. We have handed over her body to her relatives. Since our investigation is going on, an FIR will be registered on Sunday morning.”
The Ayurveda student’s father is a civil contactor. A source said he was not aware that his son had a live-in relationship.
