It was just another day of duty for K4 Police Station’s Inspector M Saravanan on August 14. As he was returning from Puzhal Prison, he spotted a huge gathering on one of the roads. His curiosity led him to approach the crowd, where he spotted a man in his mid-forties lying on the road bleeding profusely.

“I was told that his two-wheeler was hit from behind by an autorickshaw and the driver of the vehicle fled from the spot. Meanwhile, a few others told me that an ambulance was called almost half an hour ago but there was no response,” shared Saravanan. The injured man, Kamalakannan, a real estate developer from Villivakkam, was returning from Tada when he met with the accident. Saravanan quickly offered to help by taking the victim to a nearby hospital in Retteri. However, after administering first aid, the doctors told the officer that he was in a serious condition and was in need of further treatment. Kamalakannan was then transferred to Stanley Medical College Hospital.
“I immediately informed the victim’s brother, who arrived to the hospital. I also kept his family informed and was in touch with them for over a week. I contacted Kamalakannan’s brother to enquire about Kamalakannan’s wellbeing. However, he succumbed to the injuries this week.” Saravanan, who has been in service for over 18 years, appealed to the public to act promptly in such accident cases.
“We don’t realise how important it is to act swiftly. You don’t have to be police officer to help an individual. By helping a person you will be saving a life and the person’s family from a lot of grief. It is basic humanity,” he said. “I don’t think I did anything remarkable. It is my duty, like anyone else’s.” The humble cop regrets that he could not save the life.
