PUNE: The city traffic police have decided to confiscate the vehicles of the motorists breaching traffic rules
thrice without paying fines. They will also come down heavily on those driving on the wrong side, riding triple seat and stopping on the zebra crossing.
City police commissioner K Venkatesham on Thursday said his personnel would use the CCTV cameras extensively to book traffic rule violators. “If a motorist is captured on CCTV cameras breaking the traffic rules regularly, we will confiscate and retain the vehicle until the fine is paid. This confiscation will be done after the third violation if the fine is not paid,” he said.
Venkatesham said the police would enforce the traffic rules ruthlessly and urged people not to violate the norms. “Pune ranks first in India in terms of ease of living but, when it comes to traffic, it stands 25th,” he observed.
In a bid to check traffic rule violations, the police had earlier decided to delay the passport verification process of regular offenders. “This action will pinch them,” Venkatesham said.
Talking about the physical abuse of traffic policemen by some motorists, Venkatesham said, “We have decided to invoke a more stringent law against those who physically or verbally abuse traffic police on the roads.” The police would also request the courts to expedite the hearing of these cases and strive to achieve conviction, he said.
The police are executing a survey across the city to improve the traffic situation. A 14-point programme has been designed for the survey. It includes the conditions of footpath and roads, signal functioning, illegal parking, encroachment on footpaths/roads, weekly bazaars and regular accident spots.
Venkatesham said, “This is being done to reduce jams and better management of traffic. The findings of the survey will be used for enforcement and infrastructure developments with the help of the civic body.”
