The Supreme Court on Friday directed the water level in Mullaperiyar Dam be maintained at 139 feet till August 31.

The order came a day after a disaster management sub-committee monitoring the water level of the dam, which in situated in Kerala but serves Tamil Nadu, asked Tamil Nadu to keep the water limit of the reservoir 2-3 feet below its top level of 142 feet.

The apex court also told both states to cooperate and follow the directions of the panel on Mullaperiyar dam.

Kerala had told the apex court on Thursday that Tamil Nadu’s failure to control release of water from the Mullaperiyar dam till the reservoir reached its full capacity is one of the reasons for the flash floods in Kerala that killed over 350 people and damaged property worth thousands of crores.
