Bike theft racket busted; 46 recovered in city

In a significant breakthrough, the Commissionerate police busted a motorbike lifting racket by arresting a fake lawyer, Sashi Mishra, allegedly involved in stealing bikes from various public places in the city.

Later, the police recovered as many as 46 stolen bikes from his possession.

As per sources, the Badagada police who was keeping a tab on the fake lawyer through CCTVs saw him arrive at the local court premises wearing a lawyer’s attire in a bid to flee with a bike parked in the premises.

But before he could think of stealing it, police personnel pounced on him and his associates.

Later, the 46 bikes were recovered from his possession of which 17 were returned to the owners by police, sources said.

Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty informed that miscreants involved in the racket had a unique modus operandi.

“They used to deceive people as they wandered around various places wearing the dress of a lawyer.”

“They knew that way no one would be suspicious about their movements. They have stolen bikes from the premises of courts, Sub-Registrar office, Tehsil office, the Capital Hospital and many other public places in the city.”

“Based on the CCTV footages, personnel of the Badagada police station nabbed them and seized all the stolen motorcycles,” added Mohanty.
