Allege residents of JJ camp; say most women avoid using the toilets at night

After a 9-year-old resident of a camp was raped when she had gone to use the public toilet, a 16-year-old girl said that she is now scared to use them.

Over 25 portable toilets were installed by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) a few months ago. Locals alleged that those have become a hub for drug addicts.

“Most women of the camp do not use the toilets. We use the area near our homes. It is scary, especially at night,” said the 16-year-old.

‘No lock, light, water’

The girls said that there is no provision of locking the toilets from inside. “There are no light or water,” said an 18-year-old.

‘Anti-social elements’

Locals also alleged that the toilets are mostly used by drug addicts who camp till late night and make them uncomfortable.

“All sorts of anti-social elements often sit inside or behind the toilets. They take drugs, consume alcohol and create nuisance. There is no one to keep a check on them,” said Ali Akbar, a 35-year-old resident.

The residents alleged that this has led to the rise in crime in the area. “Eve-teasing, snatching and fights have become common. We have approached officials who visit the area, but in vain,” Ali said.

Responding to the allegations, DUSIB member Bipin Rai said they are aware of the issues and the matter was raised in the board meeting last month. “It was decided that till these issues are resolved, these toilets will not be installed anywhere,” he said.

“We all work as house helps and leave our children alone. Who will take care of them?” said Kashish, the mother of a six-month-old girl.
