Onam celebrations can wait, says volunteers from the capital city who have decided to work among the flood-hit people today. A team of volunteers of Whatsapp group Anbodu Tvm has headed to Haripad in Alappuzha today from Government College for Women, Vazhuthacaud.
The team has decided to adopt the village and take relief materials and necessary items to remote areas where no aid has apparently reached till now. “We are concentrating on one area and want to show that how you can make a difference if there is a collective effort,” says Sobha Viswanath of the team.
It is being done in association with volunteers of Anbodu Haripad, a Whatsapp group launched by Rajeev Peethambaran, a fashion designer, in Haripad.
A team of 10, under the aegis of Art of Living and Lions Club, left for Chengannur on Thursday (August 24) evening with relief supplies. “There are techies, auto drivers, retired hands and people from all walks of life in the team. We want to spend a full day with those people. It will send across a message of brotherhood to many others,” says Nived P.M., a techie. They are carrying relief supplies and separate kits for families, which comprises rice, pulses, curry powders, cleaning lotions, and more.
Meanwhile over 60 people from the city, working for a voluntary organisation, has been camping in Chengannur for the last three days and will return only next week.
“All of us have decided to forego Onam celebrations for these people. We have been cleaning houses, which is a laborious task. Tomorrow we will distribute kits to each families,” says K. Arunkumar, a medical representative.
