Garbage collection bins on roads will be a thing of the past in another year or so, because in many more local bodies waste segragation will be introduced at the collection level,” says Commissioner of Municipal Administration G. Prakash at a department meeting in Tambaram.
By February 2019, a portion of the biodegradable waste generated in Tambaram, Pallavaram and Sembakkam municipalities will not be sent to dumping grounds. Thanks to the efforts taken by the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA), which include opening of micro-compost processing centres, eight municipalities in the Chengalpet region have been brought under a system of source segregation.
“We insist on residents handing over segregated waste to workers and in many areas, waste collection and segregation have become easy due to awareness among residents. Wherever there is a shortage of sanitary workers, vacancies will be filled soon,” says
S. Elangovan, regional director, Municipal Administration, Chengalpet.
